Along with the 4S Droid’niGnorants are going to weep whilst iPhone reigns supreme. Now we will see who sulks and languishes in ignorance; that is iDroid boy, i for ignorant.

Clearly just an Apple fanboy blinded by marketing...

@ Paul Snyder

Apple has only ever popularised innovations that other companies thought of first.Name me one feature on the iPhone that hadn't been created by someone else first. Apple may be slicker and better looking, but truly innovative? No. Popular? Yes.

The article sounds like sour grapes from someone who just does not get the fact that technology is about innovations and not about the hottest hardware in town. Iphone's were and are revolutionary whether you like apple or not. Tech reviews should not sound like Rush Limbaugh wrote them.

Apple has once again brought something that has been used for years and now has finally put it I the iPhone . This has been happening for quiet a while. Every up grade that has come out from apple has had minor but necessary upgrade features that shouldve come out when the phone had been released. That being said the iPhone has reveloutioniezed the waythat we use our cell phones . Also a great way to maximize the use of the iPhone is to jail break the phone. It allows the user to do things that apple has no update for . And if your going to spend almost $200 or $300 to record video PLEASE I recommand you get the jail break. The also hav an app that works with all type of iPhone weather it's the first Gen. Or the 3g. So if you really what the iPhone I recommand you do with the jail break which also allows you to use other phone companies like t- moblie .

Cut Apple a break.

Everyone expected a million things from them and if they had given people even half of the things they were expecting they would have to ask for a heck of a lot more money and with the economy the way it is and AT&T being the carrier I'm pretty sure even if they did have everything you wouldn't want to purchase a phone for 1000 dollars.

It doesn't have a bigger screen? Seriously it has one of the biggest already it doesn't need a bigger screen. And the compass feature I think is actually quite cool. And face it people we are buying the app store and the name when you purchase the Iphone if you don't like it don't buy it, but please shut up and quit whining about how you didn't get everything you ever wanted.
That's a lame complaint.
It's a World Wide DEVELOPER Conference. Not a geek hardware fest... The BIG THING, as you may have noticed, was the iPhone OS 3.0. Not the iPhone 3GS! The spent most of the time talking about the iPhone OS 3.0 and it's a Developer Conference so I don't now why you are disappointed.

Ok Alll of you' are missing the point to this release of the iphone 3g S

I would agree on the minor updates from the current 3G to this 3G S but like I said youre missing the point and here is why.
2G users were reluctant to upgrade to 3G since they would one) have to cancel contract get new one 2) it was in my opinion not offering anymore than gps assistance and worste battery life and 3)Software updates gave 2G customers the same access to apps
A typical contract with ATT and most every other provider is 2-3 years so for us 2G customers the update for 3GS is worth it! in another year when the 3G customer contracts are up expect a worth while update for you!
Why did you leave out the *new* feature of Voice Control in the 3GS?

What else did you leave out in your review?
Being a IPhone user for some time ( having switched from Windows Mobile Phone ), I would say that iPhone is generations ahead... don't except another generation leap so soon :-)
Features that were lacking were ( every thing else is taken care of thru the Application Store )
1. Video recorder (even denied support for third party ones)
2. Generic Flash Player with browser.

I am hoping a s/w update will enable the features in current 3G iPhones

WHA WHA WHAA!! Ive seen plenty of disappointing Apple keynotes. The iPhone 3GS (plus 3.0 software) is leaps and bounds better. Just because you were hoping for a phone that blows you, doesnt mean this was a lackluster upgrade. See Phinn's comments above for all the additions. I mean cmon, people.

Nice Review and COMMENTS.
I switch phones quite often and have used Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS (by next week-end).
From few comments, I think their perspective of a mobile device is just "PHONE". They can very well use Nokia 3310, the best phone Nokia ever made. U can make calls and SMS too.

Apple never promised that they would deliver something out of box on June 8th. It was all rumors which in the first we should not believe.

For "Anything but apple" - If you don't want to buy iPhone, thats your call. But dude, grow up. As far as your so called competitors with better phones.... Apple started the game and they are following. Touch screen was not their innovation anyway.

Is this a joke? The iPhone 3GS is a massive improvement on the iPhone platform. The 3.0 software is just the beginning. But a whole new CPU thats 2x as fast, OpenGL sES 2.0, 256mbs of RAM, 16 or 32GB versions, 3 Mpix camera with autofocus, video recording, voice commands, compass, hardware encryption, an oil-resistant coating... All that power and new features AND have better battery life while keeping the price at the same $199.

Not to mention all of that and it enabled them to hit the $99 price point with 3G.

How can anyone be disappointed with that? That's a bunch of improvements for the iPhone.

I'm a hard-core apple fan. I've used Apples for many years and have always defended their high prices.

I purchased the iPhone 1 on the day is was released, and upgraded to the iphone 2 (3G) on the day that was released too. Again, I've always defended the iphone when people criticise it puny camera, or lack of some basic abilities (MMS!).

But even I have to say that this 'new phone' is a total let down. First off.. it's an upgrade at best.. certainly not a new phone.. secondly, if I want to upgrade my existing iphone 3G I have to either a) wait for my current contract to expire, or b) buy myself out of my current contract (!!) and PAY to enter in to a new one. And for what - a phone that looks EXACTLY THE SAME - is SLIGHTLY faster and has video??

Its a joke. Are we beginning to see the start of what Apple is like without Steve Jobs at the helm? I hope not.

I would have to agree with this review - the iPhone 3G S is the Xbox 360 of phones. Not in poor quality design but in terms of incorporating yesterday's technology into today's market and getting it's fans to believe it's cutting edge.

DVD, HDMI-less on launch, optional hard drives, optional wifi can be associated with no front faceing camera, only a 3.2MP camera, only now getting MMS and copy/paste. Both products tout they are cutting edge but that statement is true only if you are living in 2005. Time to look for a better phone.

The MS bashing at the event was pretty classless too. MS has some great products and some not so great products but bashing them at a conference like that is pretty classless. I expected better from Apple.
Cant's agree more on this. More disapointing news is from AT&t: No MMS yet. No Tethering. AT&T is considering an additional $60-70 a month for tethering. Also if you are already AT&T's customer, you'll have to pay hundreds more on this new phone.

Nice review. Up until now I have been holding off on the iPhone hysteria, but based on the rumors leading up to the 3G-S I was starting to get excited. But the announcement landed with a thud, and I have one HUGE beef with this new phone: no micro-SD...As you pointed out it is so much more affordable to buy a micro SD card rather than pay $100 extra just for 16 gigs...this seems like an intentional oversight to milk consumers for every penny. This is going to make me give a good hard look at other options and I might even wait until the fall to see what the new Storm 2 will be like (seeing as how it already has microSD and a 3.2mp camera)
