Apple will be live streaming its October 23 event later today, however at the time of writing, the stream may only be viewable by those who own an Apple TV. Eagle-eyed readers at 9to5Mac.com spotted an Apple Event icon on the home screen, which when opened not only gives access to older Apple event videos, but also for today’s special event.
It clearly states “tune in at 10am on October 23 to watch this event live,” so there’s no doubt it’ll go ahead — barring any last minute changes of course. This is the first time Apple has streamed an event since 2010, and it’s something that journalists and Apple fans alike have all eagerly requested.
While the many excellent live-blogs and the occasional, and highly dubious, Ustream.com coverage help bring mere mortals closer to the action, it’s not quite the same as an officially sanctioned video feed.
But what if you don’t have an Apple TV? At the moment, it appears you’re out of luck. Apple’s events page lists nothing newer than the iPhone 5 get-together, and there’s no mention of a live stream on the apple.com homepage. A quick check of the iTunes App Store doesn’t bring up any results for a similar app for iOS devices either. This could all change later on, so we’ll update here should Apple make any announcements.
In the meantime, Apple TV owners can find the app listed on the welcome page. The app is visible on US and UK Apple TVs, and also when you’re not signed into an account, so with luck Apple won’t be restricting it to US viewers.
If you don’t own an Apple TV, don’t despair, we’ll be bringing you all the news as it happens — and here’s what we’re expecting — or if you’re really keen, there’s just about time to pop out and buy one before the event starts.
*Update*
Apple will also stream today’s event on its website here. You’ll need Safari 4 running on a Mac with OS X 10.6 or later though. It’ll also appear on iOS devices with iOS 4.2 or later too.
Streaming now and it’s AWESOME!
Ken, are you a complete imbecile? LOL.
Keep supporting a company that throws non removable batteries in all of their products and takes their competitors to court for laughable reasons, locks down their laptops to prevent you from ever upgrading… Do I need to go on? Maybe I should. Pay $300-$400 more for a product with identical hardware and less features. Apple thrives on the consumers who will never do their own research.
Agreed….owning an Apple TV or a Mac is in fact lame
lame!
Love it! Not lame at all!!!
Not lame
Who still thinks that ancient windows is relevant?
Andriod for phone and office is pc based. Guess i will listen to twit and see how they relay the info.
Incredibly stupid that you need a Mac or Apple TV to view this stream live. Apparently Apple does not want any new customers.
Agreed. Good thing I have both, though!
