1st-Gen-iPod

The very first iPod (packing a whopping 5 GB) to enter the fray in a long and successful line of portable MP3 players came out on October, 23, 2001, with iTunes following later in January. What might be a surprise to some is that the initial iPod only worked on Macs and played exclusively AAC, MPC and WAV audio files.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the iPod, we take a look at the many iterations of Apple's revolutionary device throughout the past decade.

The iPod is and was a truly revolutionary device when it was released nearly a decade ago. The release of the iPod helped shape Apple into the company it is today and can be directly attributed to the Cupertino-based company’s success — and overall relevance. Additionally, the iPod has almost single-handedly shaped the modern smartphone as we know it and changed the way we purchase and listen to music, media, and more.
