Rumor: Apple planning to launch new product this weekend

apple-logoAs Apple approaches the 10th anniversary of the opening of its first retail store on Thursday, rumors are circulating that the computer giant is about to spring a surprise or two on its fans.

Boy Genius Report is claiming that, according to a “solid Apple source,” the company may be planning “something big” for the weekend.

BGR says that between 10 and 15 employees at each Apple store will be working an overnight shift from Saturday evening and that during that shift, employees will be told to lock their cell phones in the main office and also asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

“Apple stores have apparently already received hardware to install, and are expecting more hardware to come on Friday or Saturday,” BGR says. “All materials that Apple stores have received have been instructed to be under lock and key until after close on Saturday night.”

BGR also claims that Apple employees will be “putting up black curtains at all stores so that people walking outside cannot see inside.”

If BGR is right, we can only speculate as to what exactly the company, which now has more than 300 stores worldwide, might have up its sleeve. A new product perhaps? Is Apple about to surprise us with the launch of a smaller iPhone? Or could it be something completely different – there’s been a lot of talk about its rumored iCloud service recently.

With the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference less than a month away, it might seem strange to some that this weekend would be chosen instead to bring something new to the marketplace.

As usual, the company remains tight-lipped about what might be happening this weekend. Even those working in the stores won’t know what’s coming, if anything. Perhaps it’ll be nothing more than the launch of some new items aimed at interior decorators. iCurtains, anyone? Available in black.

The Vision Pro headset will be available to order in the U.S. starting February 2, Apple has just announced, with preorders opening at 5 a.m. PT on January 19. It means the hotly anticipated new product from the Cupertino firm is less than a month away from release.

In a press release on its website, Apple said that the device would be available at both in-store locations and via its website on February 2. Right now, that’s limited to U.S. stores and American online customers. No mention was made of when the headset will be released to users in the rest of the world, although Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said he doesn’t expect we will have long to wait until that happens.
