Covered by Houston’s local NBC affiliate KPRC, a UPS delivery man decided it would be a brilliant idea to steal an iPad Mini off the doorstep of a home in North Harris county. The Apple tablet had been delivered at the home of Al Alverson at 9:45 a.m. by a FedEx delivery man. Since Apple requires a signature on delivery, Alverson had left a pre-signed delivery form taped to the front of the house authorizing the driver to leave the package by the front door. Alverson had ordered the iPad Mini for his daughter as a Christmas present and wanted to make sure the tablet was delivered in time for the holiday.
Just before 2:00 p.m., an unnamed UPS delivery man arrived at Alverson’s home to deliver a package. The security camera mounted above Alverson’s front door captured video of the UPS delivery man taking a closer look at the FedEx package before ringing the doorbell and walking away.
After waiting a few minutes to see if anyone answered the door, the UPS delivery man returned and picked up the FedEx package. The UPS delivery man looked at the package for a moment pretending to check the label and walked back to his truck.
Alverson contacted UPS over the phone to complain about the theft, but felt like he was “getting the run around” by the people handling the claim according to an interview with KHOU News. After posting the video footage to YouTube and Vimeo on Wednesday night, Alverson was quickly visited by a local deputy as well as a UPS investigator on Thursday morning.
UPS officials easily tracked down the thief based off the delivery records and fired him immediately for stealing the tablet. According to UPS, the delivery man was hired as a seasonal employee to help with the increase in package volume during the holidays. A new iPad Mini was delivered to Alverson on late Thursday courtesy of UPS and he removed the video from both YouTube and Vimeo. However, several mirrors of the security footage have been posted online. According to KHOU News, the delivery man was arrested by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and charged with theft.
On behalf of all UPSers, we are disappointed at the actions of a temporary helper who took a package from the doorstep of a customer. The holiday helper has been terminated for his actions. This does not represent our 400,000 UPsers who deliver millions of packages every day with pride and integrity. We have resolved this situation with our customer, and they are satisfied. Thank you, Annee Millman, UPS Social Media
Why would UPS leave a package at someone’s doorstep to begin with ! I thought policy would dictate someone actually answering the door and signing for a package and if that didn’t happen, the package would be redelivered ! Shows what I know !
You didn’t read the article…
“Since Apple requires a signature on delivery, Alverson had left a pre-signed delivery form taped to the front of the house authorizing the driver to leave the package by the front door”
Not a great deal… obviously. Read the story again. This time slower. You’ll get a better understanding of what happened here.
Derp! Read the article first, then comment.
Neither UPS, USPS, or FedEx require signatures unless either the sender or recipient arranges for it. Definitely shows what you know.

Then why give this homeowner the runaround till you found out he had videotape of your employee caught red-handed stealing?looks like he did the job for your lazy investigators and you still tried to blow him off till it was shown on nationwide TV. How thoughtful of UPS !
They are a HORRIBLE company. They refused insurance on my iPod Touch they stole that I bought for my brother for Christmas. He has MS and this was a huge purchase for me to make his life a little better. They denied they did it. GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! How thoughtful of UPS indeed.
ok, why did the UPS customer get a RUN-AROUND when he tried to call it in?? This is a major failure of UPS to not clean up after it’s THIEVES!!

Yes UPS did make things right BUT first they gave the customer a real run around as they ALWAYS do trying to get the customer to just give up and write it off as a bad deal.
AND even then not until they were FORCED to by the customer posting the video online to show the world how you are treated by UPS.
I have had a real bad problem with UPS quite a few times but will only show what happened in the worst one.
I had a package worth well over $600.00 that was delivered to a wrong address over 15 miles away bya rural route UPS driver.
Of course I didn’t know it had been delivered at all so I called UPS and was given a REAL BAD runaround as they said it was delivered by the driver and he had signed it off, it went this way for well over 2 months with me trying at least 3 times times a week.
Then the person that got the package finally called me and ask about the package she had received and of course I went and picked it up.
It had not been opened but was seriously damaged so I DID NOT open it either but started calling UPS trying to explain the situation and was even hung up on but finally after about another 3 weeks they did finally have the delivery driver stop and look it over and write a report, then it took another 2 1/2 weeks for him to come by again and pick the package up and give me a ticket on it.
Well after that it took 121 more days with me calling every week to get them to make it right with me.
YES they did after almost 9 months take care of THEIR problem.
SO MUCH FOR UPS CUSTOMER SERVICE.

UPS is union FedEx is not….their ground is but that is because they are outsourced not actual FedEx, lesson again unions suck, they are lazy, they are thieves+ and their leaders show them the way. I yearn for the day that unions are kaput. They bring nothing but worst out of people. Normal teachers, officers, firemen etc., become the most callous and immoral people when they join the union mob!
I am not big on unions either. But I was a supervisor at UPS for over 30 years and the people that worked for me were some of the most honest, decent people anyone could meet. Don’t judge all UPS employees by the actions of one. The drivers I worked with were hard working and customer oriented, and yes they were union and I was management. In the end we were all just working to support our families as best as we could.
yeah, but who’s COUNTING?
Thank you for sharing your story. UPS has terrible customer service. I ordered a package from HSN with $550.00 worth of merchandise. They left it at my apartment door, instead of the office. The package was stolen. All of my previous packages had been left at my apartment complex office. When I called UPS I was treated awful. HSN told me UPS said the package was received by me, even though it was just left at my door & not signed for. I tried d for a year to resolve the issue to no avail. My brother works for the State Attorney General’s office & he finally resolved it for me. I won’t ever deal with HSN or UPS again. I shop at QVC & I use fed ex or US mail.
They were uncaring when I called them also. Sorry about your headache from them!
