This Volvo will drop you off, park itself – and pick you up later

Remember how everyone was “ooh”-ing and “ahh”-ing over the new Ford models that could parallel park themselves, requiring the driver to only apply brake and accelerator input? Well get ready to forget that virtual child’s play.

Volvo announced this morning that it has developed a car that will not only park itself; it’ll do it without the driver inside the car at all.

The driver simply pulls up to a parking structure and pops out of the car. From there, the Volvo takes over, searching through the structure for an open spot. When it finds one, it parks itself. When the driver is ready to be picked back up at the original drop-off spot, he or she calls the car with a smartphone app and the car returns.

Don’t worry, your Volvo won’t turn into Christine when you’re not around – it’s a pedestrian-friendly Volvo after all. No, it’ll use autonomous driving with auto brake to safety interact with pedestrians and other cars while it searches for a spot.

Sadly, this self-parking Volvo is simply in concept form at the moment. But Volvo has announced that the all-new 2015 XC90, which will debut at the end of 2014, will feature autonomous steering. Volvo didn’t elaborate more on what that system entails so we reached out to a Volvo rep for further explanation. We were informed it was simply a teaser statement and that no further information is available at this time.

We absolutely love the idea of a car that will drop you off at the mall, for instance, park itself, and come pick you back up when you’re done. Now if only it could also take the kids to school and read to them in bed at night, we could finally get caught up on Game of Thrones.
