A low-resolution image posted on Instagram by user dreboog might have given us an early look at the all-new 2017 Audi R8.

The leaked image reveals that the next R8 gets a more muscular look that puts it in line with Audi’s latest design language. The headlights are noticeably sharper while the radiator grille is wider, lower and it adopts a hexagonal shape. Interestingly, it looks like the current R8’s prominent side blades have not been carried over to the new model.

The next R8 will ride on the same platform as the Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4. Although technical details were not leaked, sources close to Audi have previously hinted that the R8 will continue to be offered with either a V8 or a V10 engine. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will handle shifting duties but the R8 is expected to lose its enthusiast-friendly six-speed manual gearbox.

Audi executives have confirmed that engineers are putting the final touches on an all-electric version of the R8 that is tentatively badged e-tron. Aimed at BMW’s i8 plug-in hybrid, the R8 e-tron will offer a total driving range of at least 310 miles thanks to recent advances in battery technology.

Full details about the 2017 Audi R8 will be available in the next few weeks. Both the R8 and the battery-powered R8 e-tron will be presented to the public next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

Can Audi plant its flag on Bentley’s turf with a palatial A8-based sedan?
2019 Audi A8 First Drive

The fourth-generation A8 proudly reigns over the Audi lineup as the company's flagship model. It's more lavish than ever before, and it oozes with cutting-edge tech features, but the German company believes there is room to make it even more luxurious in order to reach new buyers -- and, in the process, rival some of the world's most prestigious automakers.

Audi CEO Bram Schot told investors that the company has started working on a "particularly luxurious and prestigious derivative" of the A8. "We are thinking about revolutionizing the top-end class with a completely new concept for the A8," he said without going into further details.

Audi TT will get the ax to make way for electric cars — and the R8 may be next
Audi TT 20th Anniversary Edition

After just over 20 years, the Audi TT will be killed off to make room for more electric cars. The news, which came out of the German automaker's annual shareholder meeting, was reported by Bloomberg and other outlets and confirmed in the transcript of that meeting. Executives also cast doubt on the future of the R8 as Audi looks to shift from internal combustion to electric power.

Audi is "shedding old baggage," Chief Financial Officer Alexander Seitz said at the meeting. He said internal-combustion cars are getting more expensive to develop due to stricter emissions standards, while electric cars "are getting cheaper." That's leading Audi to take a hard look at its current lineup of cars -- including the TT.
