Three little letters: M, P, and G. Alone they are weak, but put them together and they form what serves as the central focus of virtually every major automaker (yes, even Chrysler): miles per gallon.
Nowadays fuel economy is one of the most, if not the most, important factor when purchasing a car. So with automakers resolving to meet government quotas and luring cash-conscious buyers, it’s safe to say manufacturers will be doing everything possible to make sure those three little letters see increasingly larger numbers trailing them each and every year.
Which brings us to Ford and the company’s new 2013 Focus ST. The American automaker has just released official EPA fuel economy ratings for its sportiest Focus model. Drivers can expect a return of 32 mpg highway, 23 mpg city, and 26 mpg combined, courtesy of the ST’s turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
Naturally, Ford is keen to point out that the latest mpg figures place the 2013 Focus ST in pole position: besting both the Volkswagen GTI five-door (21 mpg city, 21 mpg highway) and the MazdaSpeed3 (18 mpg in city, 25 mpg highway) in total fuel economy. And with the 2013 Focus ST’s engine managing to spit out 255 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, it also manages to best the VW in power, but comes just shy of the Speed3’s 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Of course, if you wish to remain frugal about your fuel, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder Focus can see a return of up to 40 mpg highway (you’ll need the special fuel economy package) and you’ll have to make due with 160 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, which equates to about 92 hp and 130 lb-ft less than the Focus ST, respectively.
“We’re putting the ‘power’ in the power of choice, again,” said Raj Nair, Ford vice president of Engineering for Global Product Development. “This is just one more example of the ‘win-win’ in the Focus ST narrative. This kind of performance combined with these high levels of efficiency was unknown of until we made this car.”
Whether that’s truly the case we can’t say for sure, but Ford seems to be on a roll, delivering improved fuel economy and vastly enhanced designs. Sadly, we haven’t had a chance to climb behind the wheel of the 2013 Focus ST just yet, but we imagine it won’t be long until we do. And if our experience with the 2012 Focus SEL is anything to go off of, we’re in for quite the ride.
