Mercedes-AMG sketches out its 2016 DTM racer

Mercedes-Benz has already revealed its new 2017 C-Class Coupe and AMG C63 hot rod, but there’s one more two-door C-Class model that needs to be replaced. The outgoing C-Class currently represents Mercedes in DTM, Germany’s most popular home-grown racing series, so it’s time for a new racecar as well.

DTM, which stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (German Touring Car Masters), is essentially Germany’s version of NASCAR, only with turns that go both left and right, and a much higher level of technology. When the new season begins in 2016, there will be a new Mercedes racer on the grid.

As these sketches show, the DTM car will have very little in common with a stock C-Class. As in NASCAR, DTM rules require that all cars essentially be the same, regardless of the manufacturer. So while it will wear Mercedes-AMG C63 badging, the racer will be almost identical to rival cars from Audi and BMW.

But the specifications for those cars read like something that would happen if NASCAR teams had NASA’s budget. DTM cars use a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, massive carbon brakes, and are festooned with enough aerodynamic aids to make a Le Mans prototype blush. All cars currently have 4.0-liter V8 engines, tuned to around 500 horsepower.

Given how little the racecar has in common with the road car, the old adage “win on Sunday, sell on Monday,” probably doesn’t apply here. Instead, DTM represents just one more arena where the hyper-competitive trio of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes can duke it out. The German manufacturers are just as enthusiastic about DTM as Chevy, Ford, and Toyota are about NASCAR, or Ferrari is about Formula One.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM will debut at the beginning of the 2016 season next year. Its road-going counterpart will debut later in 2016, sometime after the base C-Class Coupe goes on sale.

Mercedes-AMG GT 73 plug-in hybrid will unleash 805 hp, report says
2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is already pretty fast, but Mercedes may be planning an even faster version. Autocar reports that the GT 4-Door will get a plug-in hybrid powertrain anchored by a twin-turbocharged V8 that makes an impressive 805 horsepower. The British magazine published purported spy photos of this car, expected to be dubbed Mercedes-AMG GT 73 4Matic, undergoing testing. AMG may have other high-performance plug-in hybrids in the pipeline as well.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain could be a production version of the one used in the original GT concept from the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, according to Autocar. That car married a plug-in hybrid system with the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 used in numerous current Mercedes-AMG models. It also had all-wheel drive (4Matic, in Mercedes speak) so the production version will likely have that, too. Autocar predicts an electric-only range of 31 miles, although that's likely based on the European WLTP testing cycle, not the U.S. EPA cycle.

Leak gives an early sneak peek at Mercedes-AMG’s pocket rocket CLA45
2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 leaked photo

Mercedes-Benz has already revealed two versions of its redesigned CLA compact four-door: The base CLA250 and the sportier AMG CLA35. But there's one more version on the way, and it's making its first appearance earlier than expected. Auto Bild and Motor1 spotted a leaked photo of that car, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA45, on Mercedes' own German website.

The photo in question appeared in the online configurator for the CLA35. The website initially shows a yellow CLA35, but clicking on the section detailing an optional Night Package brings up a photo of the rear of the CLA45. The badging gives it away, as do subtle differences like quad exhaust tips (the CLA35 only has two exhaust tips), different wheels, and red-painted brake calipers. We don't know what the front looks like, but it will likely feature more aggressive styling to further differentiate the CLA45 from the CLA35 and could possibly include the Panamericana grille used on other AMG models like the GT four-door coupe.

Mercedes to trial humanoid robots for ‘low-skill, repetitive, demanding’ jobs
Apptronik's Apollo robot at work in an auto plant.

Humanoid robots have been coming on leaps and bounds in recent years, and some major companies are starting to take note.

Mercedes-Benz, for example, has just entered into an agreement with Texas-based robotics specialist Apptronik to collaborate on identifying applications for highly advanced robots that the auto giant could deploy. The deal will involve a trial that will see Apptronik's Apollo humanoid robot work alongside Mercedes' human workers on the factory floor.
