Trekkers rejoice! The upcoming Star Trek movie has it’s own app, and it’s a good one!
Qualcomm has joined forces with Paramount Pictures to build a unique promotional app for the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Announced earlier this week at Qualcomm’s press conference at CES, the app will reportedly use location-based technology and image-recognition software to deliver specific content to users.
For example, if user did something like scan a movie poster or check into a movie theater through the app, they would be rewarded with points that could be used to access exclusive content – a teaser trailer, lets say. As the release date for Star Trek: Into Darkness draws nearer, the content served up by the app will be progressively newer – essentially making the app a hub for anyone who’s eagerly anticipating the film’s release.
Although this isn’t the first app designed to promote a movie, this is certainly the most advanced, broad, and exciting one around. Into Darkness doesn’t hit theaters until May 17, but keep an eye out for this app toward the end of January.
