E Ink has a new competitor. We caught up with Mirasol at Qualcomm’s booth at CES yesterday, where representatives showed us a fully operational E-reader with color that uses the Mirasol display. Though it uses a different technology from E Ink that’s built on thousands of tiny pixel-sized mirrors, the Mirasol display is able to produce color images that refresh a lot faster than E-Ink (you can watch video on it) for almost as little power. The Mirasol e-reader on display was able to run for several weeks on a single charge. This isn’t great compared to the two months that a Kindle will last, but for the ability to watch video and have color, it’s a helluva lot better than the battery life of any tablet.
This e-reader also uses a front light so that it’s viewable in darker rooms, another feature that the market should welcome, considering a lot of people end up buying a light for their e-reader.
There currently aren’t any e-readers coming to the US using this technology, but it could give the e-reader market a good shot to the arm. At the very least, it will be a strong competitor to E Ink’s new color display.
