Hands on with Polaroid’s M Series and S Series Android tablets

Polaroid is out to prove that a slick, well-designed, and powerful tablet doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. But at these prices, the slates may prove too good to be true.

One path to success in the Android tablet market is to make a low-cost device, but then disguise it with the appearance of something fancier. This is the path Polaroid is going with their M Series 7 and 10.1-inch tablets, and the new 9.7-inch S Series. Prices start at $129, which drastically undercuts the competition, including the popular Nexus 7.

Polaroid claims that it didn’t cut corners on quality to reach this price point. You still get a nice, bright IPS display, dual-core and quad-core processors, and thin, light designs. The S Series is particularly good-looking thanks to a red case and some nice contours on the back. At this price you won’t get dual cameras on every model, but you do get full Android and access to the Google Play store.

During our hands-on we noted decent performance and the Polaroid skin isn’t too overbearing and will likely appeal to mainstream, less tech-savvy consumers. The 7 and 10.1-inch M Series is available now on Polaroid’s website and the S Series is coming this spring.
