Alienware Unveils New Area-51 Notebooks

Dell‘s boutique computer subsidiary Alienware has formally unveiled its new Area-51 m15x and m17x notebook computers, aiming to pack for much power and storage capacity into a notebook form factor that even performance-hungry desktop users will have to sit up and take notice. Although Alienware hasn’t unveiled the full specs, pricing, and release information, available details may already have road warriors and avid gamers re-jiggering their holiday budgets.

The Area-51 m15x and m17x feature 15.4-inch and 17-inch screens, respectively. The m15x will offer an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processor, Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX graphics (which Alienware promises delivers “above 1080p” video), and dual hard drive capabilities. The similarly-specced m17x will offer dual Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX graphics controllers, along with space for a third hard drive. Alienware will be offering an SSD drive as an option for extra drive bays in both models.

Customers who want to be the first to know when the m17x and m15x will be available can sign up with Alienware to get the latest news; in the meantime, folks will have to content themselves with the notebooks’ sleek designs (which feature “Skullcap” and “Ripley”-themed lids and backlit keyboards (apparently to be available in blue or pink…er, light red).
