AMD’s October Sales Surpass Intel

Research firm Current Analysis says chip-maker AMD's sales edged past Intel's during October, although Intel still holds the top spot for consumer PCs.

Research firm Current Analysis says that chip-maker AMD surpassed market giant Intel as the top supplier of processors for the U.S. retail computer market in October 2005. According to the report, 49.8 percent of personal computers sold in the U.S. during the month of October used AMD processors, while systems using Intel chips accounted for 48.5 percent of personal computers sold in the U.S. during the same period.

“AMD did the unthinkable by surpassing Intel in October. Continuing to hold this lead in the holiday season would be a colossal win for the company,” Matt Sargent, Director of Research at Current Analysis wrote in a release about the report.

According to Current Analysis, AMD also led Intel slightly during September in the desktop computer category, although October marks the first time the company has eclipsed Intel across the entire U.S. retail PC category. During October AMD accounted for 67.8 percent of the U.S. retail desktop computer market and 31.5 percent of the U.S. retail notebook market.

Nonetheless, Intel still dominates U.S. consumer PC sales
