Preview version of AOL's future Windows based instant messaging client to be released later this week with features like an expanded buddy list and VoIP.
AOL today announced they would be releasing a preview edition of their new AIM Triton service later this week. Under beta testing since April, this new AOL feature is designed to replace the online service’s current Windows instant messaging clients. The new AIM Triton service, AOL said, would offer a wide variety of features. These include a Plaxo-enabled address book, VoIP, an expanded buddy list which supports up to 500 contacts, a redesigned AIM Today screen, an improved file transfer service and audio streaming of over 150 AOL radio channels as well as 20 XM Satellite Radio music stations. The beta of the AIM Triton service will be available later this week here and here. "We have rebuilt the AIM service from the ground up to make it a powerful communications tool that offers unprecedented versatility. Our goal is to let people focus on who they want to talk to and what they want to say, instead of worrying about which software application they need to open," said Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president and general manager, AIM and ICQ, America Online, Inc. "And our new AIM Address Book enables users to quickly bring contact information for everyone they know directly into the AIM Buddy List feature – where it will always be up to date and at their finger tips."
