Apple Suggests Mac Antivirus

Apple is urging users of Mac computers to use antivirus software, a definite sign of changing malware times.

Remember when Mac owners were so smug about malware because they were safe? Well, wave goodbye to those days. Now even Apple is urging Mac owners to use antivirus software, largely as a response to booby-trapped sites that can infect visitors, the BBC reports.

The company has posted a note on its support site, going as far as to recommend some products to be used together.

"Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."

So who gets a bite of the Apple for antivirus? McAfee VirusScan, Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11, and Intego VirusBarrier X5 are the company’s preferences.

So far, most viruses have been aimed at Windows computers, largely because there are so many of them, but viruses targeting Mac OS X have started popping up.
