New iMacs on sale today, but you can only take home the 21-inch model

Though there was some speculation earlier this week, we were certain that Apple would officially begin selling its new iMacs today. You can get your hands on the 21.5-inch iMac right away, and although orders are open for the 27-inch model, those will not ship until later in December. The company hasn’t given a precise shipping date for the larger machine, but according to AppleInsider, it could be three to four weeks before the 27-inch model ships. In terms of price, the smaller model ranges from $1,299 to $1,499. The larger model starts at $1,799 and can be tricked out for $1,999.

The new computers were first announced in October, and they have a remarkably slim profile of just 5 millimeters. But the changes aren’t purely cosmetic. MacRumors just released benchmarks from Primate Labs for the 21.5-inch model and it scored 25 percent higher than its counterpart from 2011. It also rated 10 percent above last year’s 27-inch model, which bodes well for both the sizes now available for purchase. If you’re one of the people who wants to jump on the latest Apple desktops, you’ll want to do it quickly. The iMacs and the iPad Minis have reportedly been hit by limited supplies of key components. Those production problems were part of the concern that Apple would miss it’s projected release dates.
