Last year Microsoft bought the rights to the Gears of War franchise from series creator Epic, and also hired away former Gears director of production Rod Fergusson to oversee the franchise’s production at Black Tusk Studios. Now Black Tusk is no more, but that may not be a bad thing.

Black Tusk will now be known as The Coalition, Fergusson announced yesterday in a post on Xbox Wire. The reason is pretty simple. “When people hear 343 Industries, they associate it with Halo; when they hear Turn 10 Studios, they know that’s who makes Forza. Moving forward, when you hear The Coalition, we want you to think of Gears of War,” Fergusson writes.

Gears of War fans will immediately recognize the name as a nod to the Coalition of Ordered Governments (better known as COG) from the games. Fergusson says that the new name “speaks to who we are as a team, and what it is we’re working on.”

Aside from the name change, Fergusson also said that the newly-renamed studio will be sharing “more on what’s next for Gears of War.” What exactly this means for the series isn’t yet clear.

In April we reported that several testers had been playing a remastered version of Gears of War for the Xbox One. While Fergusson said that there was “no Marcus Fenix Collection,” he didn’t deny the remaster’s existence.

The devotion of an entire studio to the Gears of War franchise means that a new game in the series is definitely on the way, it’s just a matter of when we’ll see details.

At this point, we won’t have to wait very long to see what’s coming from The Coalition. Fergusson says that “Gears fans should be sure to tune in” to the Microsoft E3 press conference on Monday, June 15 at 4 p.m. PT.

To see Fergusson explain the name change in his own words and get a peek at the new logo in motion, see the video below.

Phil Spencer on stage at E3 2019.

Despite the persistence of the global pandemic, E3 will take place this year. The only catch is that it won't be held in person as it has been in the past. This year, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) will host a digital version of E3 that still aims to showcase new and exciting game announcements, as well as updates on games we already know about.

Since E3 is usually jam-packed with games and announcements, things can get overwhelming for viewers. Fortunately, Digital Trends has all the details for this year's E3, including the participating companies, when the event will take place, and the overall confirmed schedule.

E3 2021: Starfield, Breath of the Wild 2, and more games we expect to see

The E3 season has definitely snuck up on us. It feels like just yesterday we were all still bundled up in our winter clothes, and suddenly -- bam! Now our days will be filled with refreshing livestreams of big game announcements. Until the event begins, we can only speculate as to what will be shown, which is a time-honored E3 tradition in its own right. So while we are waiting for the actual announcements, let’s ponder on the games we're likely to see on the E3 floor ... well, the digital one, that is.
Starfield

This one has been a long time coming. Starfield is Bethesda’s next big sci-fi game. The publisher announced Starfield at E3 2018, but there hasn't been much new information about it since. Bethesda’s Todd Howard has stated that a good portion of the game is currently playable, but we have not seen anything new since the vague 2018 teaser trailer. It has been heavily hinted that Starfield will be a centerpiece for the Bethesda conference at this year’s E3, so it's a safe bet that we will see at least something about this game during Microsoft and Bethesda's joint showcase.
