Evidence that computer virus infections spread like biological disease was offered by security expert Symantec, which today released its semi-annual Internet Security Threat Report.
The current rash of viruses dates to August, when three worms, all given the highest “category 4″ threat rating, were discovered within 12 days. Blaster, Welchia and SoBig infected-millions of computers, creating so much havoc that the spawned whole families of similar worms
In fact, Symantec reported, “almost one third of all attacking systems targeted the vulnerability exploited by Blaster,” and that attackers increasingly targeted “back doors” left by other attackers and worms.
