Dell Introduces Latitude D420 Ultraportable

Dell is trying its hand at the ultraportable game again, offering the D420 with Core Solo processing, seven hours of battery life, and 12.1-inch screen.

Computer maker Dell has introduced the Latitude D420, a new ultraportable laptop which weighs just over three pounds (at least, before you add on additional gear) and offers up to seven hours of battery life. “The Latitude D420 combines the sleek travel-friendly form factor of the Latitude X1 with the compatibility benefits and durability of the Latitude D410, and initial customer response has been extremely enthusiastic,” said to Alex Gruzen, senior VP of Dell’s Product Group.

The Latitude D420 features a 12.1-inch display, a full-sized keyboard, a Smart Card reader and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for enterprise security (biometric fingerprint readers are available as an option). Also on board: 3 USB 2.0 ports, an IEE 1394 (Firewire) port, an SD slot, and the choice of 802.11g or 802.11a/g wireless networking. The D420 is available now with Core Solo processors; Dell says dual core configurations will be available in coming months. The system is also compatible with existing D-series docks and peripherals from Dell (which may help businesses leverage existing equipment investments) and offers optional integrated mobile broadband from Cingular or Verizon (in the U.S.) and Vodafone (in France, Germany, and the U.K.). Moreover, the D420 claims to offer up to seven hours of use off a nine-cell battery
