Ex-WorldCom CEO Surrenders To FBI
Former WorldCom CEO Bernard Ebbers turned himself in to the FBI on Wednesday, after being charged with leading an accounting fraud that led to the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history
Ebbers’ arrival at the offices of the FBI in New York followed U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s announcement on Tuesday of criminal charges against him for fraud, conspiracy and making false statements in connection with WorldCom’s collapse.
Ebbers, who built WorldCom from a Mississippi upstart into the nation’s No. 2 long-distance phone company before it collapsed in 2002 amid an $11 billion accounting scandal, was scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on the three criminal counts.
