Gateway Gets Chic with ID Series and L23 Notebooks

Computer maker Gateway has decided to go for the stylish and chic with its latest notebook computers, taking the wraps off a new ID series and LT23 series of fashionable systems today. The LT23 netbook offers up to 8 hours of battery life and a selection of fashion-friendly cases, while the ID series cranks up to 14- and 15-inch screens with optional Nvidia Optimus graphics switching technology to power pixels through games and entertainment, but sip battery power for email and everyday computing.

First up, the new ID series will be available with 14- and 15-inch displays running at 1,366 by 768 resolution, but maybe the first thing people will notice about them is an electric blue multi-gesture trackpad that lights up when touched. The systems will be available with Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors, up to 4 GB of RAM, up to 500 GB of hard drive storage, along with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, two noise-canceling microphones, a multi-in-one memory card reader, built-in DVD drive, and HDMI output for connecting to a home theater system or HDTV. The Gateway ID49 will also feature Nvidia Optimus technology, enabling users to switch between Nvidia GT330M graphics for videos, games, and multimedia applications, while switching back to Intel integrated graphics for less demanding applications. Gateway hasn’t revealed exactly when the ID series will land at retail partners, but the 15.6-inch ID59 model will start at a suggested price of $799.99, while the ID49 model will start at $679.99.

Next, the Gateway LT23 netbook aims for the fashion-conscious computer user looking for a highly portable system. The LT23 features a 10.1-inch display, Intel Atom N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, up to 250 GB of hard drive storage, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, an integrated HD webcam, a multi-in-one digital media card reader, built-in Ethernet, VGA output, three USB 2.0 ports, and a total weight of just 2.76 pounds with a six-cell battery—a battery that Gateway says can give up to 8 hours of use. The LT23s also sport a “sophisticated” design with an organic, mosaic-like pattern women into the case in champagne, pearl, and black color schemes. The Gateway LT23 should be available now from Gateway’s retail partners for prices starting at $329.99.

The XPS 16 is fighting an uphill battle against the MacBook Pro
Dell XPS 16 sitting on desktop with flowers.

It took a few years, but Dell finally updated the design of its two largest XPS laptops. The XPS 15 gave way to the XPS 14, while the XPS 17 was replaced by the XPS 16. The latter gained the ultramodern look of the XPS 13 Plus, complete with a glass palm rest, a hidden haptic touchpad, and a row of LED function keys.

It's a significant update but places the XPS 16 in direct competition with the Apple MacBook Pro 16. That's an excellent matchup with proven performance and battery life and an elegant design that's solid, if a lot more conservative.
