Hitachi Joins Sony-made Battery Recall

Hitachi is recalling 16,000 notebook computer batteries made by Sony, most of which shipped in business notebooks sold in Japan.

Computer and consumer electronics maker Hitachi has joined the ranks of computer makers recalling Sony-made lithium-ion laptop batteries: Reuters is reporting the company is recalling some 16,000 notebook computer batteries, mostly in business systems sold in Japan.

The size of the recall doesn’t compare to the hundreds of thousands—and millions—recalled by Toshiba, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Apple, and (most significantly) Dell, but having another company join on the battery recall certainly adds to Sony’s woes. The Hitachi recall is not large enough to cut into either company’s bottom line, but according to Reuters, Hitachi is working with Sony to have the latter company pay the cost of replacing the batteries.

  1. Matt at 9:32pm 10th October 2006 Why doesnt Sony issue a general recall for all batteries that are subject to catching fire? In that case, why is it taking so long for some manufacturers to send out their own recall? If I knew that I had a potential fire threat sitting on my lap, and let's say it does and it causes some damage, doesn't that leave a lawsuit ready to happen especially after all the press, every company sporting a Sony battery should avoid the bad press and potential lawsuits and just send the recalls out now. What took you so long Hitachi??
