HP’s New PC So Green, It’s Gold

HP's new rp5700 Business Desktop PC is the first to earn the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool's "Gold" status.

HP has announced that is rp5700 Business Desktop PC is the first to earn the “gold” status of the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT).

“Customers increasingly value environmental aspects of products, such as energy efficiency, provisions for reuse and recycling, and materials innovation,” said Jeff Omelchuck, executive director of the Green Electronics Council. “HP is clearly differentiating itself by integrating such features into their products as evidenced by the rp5700 PC.”

Some 95 percent of the components in the rp5700 are recyclable, and the chassis features tool-free design to the unit can be disassembled by hand. Plastics in the system use a minimum of 10 percent post-consumer plastics, and the packaging is at least 25 percent post-consumer recycled cardboard. HP says the system’s power supply is at least 15 percent more efficient than standard power supplies, and—when paired with a flat-panel monitor—the system can use up to 80 percent less power than previous systems using CRT monitors. The systems also feature a five-year life cycle, the longest of any PC in the industry.

The rp5700 can be configured with a number of features, including an Intel Core 2 Duo processors at up to 2.3 GHz, as much as 4 GB of RAM, up to 250 GB of storage on SATA hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration for automatic backup and data retention. At a baseline, the systems offer an Intel Celeron processor, 512 MB of RAM, and Windows XP Pro for $817, but configurations dip as low as $648. The rp5700 is available now from authorized resellers.
