IE7 Malware Attack

Spam e-mails reportedly offer a link to downloads Internet Explorer 7 — but, of course, you get malware instead.

You might be one of thousands who’ve received a new spam mailing offering you the chance to download Microsoft’s browser Internet Explorer 7. The mailing claims to be from Microsoft, sent by Microsoft Feature Offers.

But, of course, it’s not. Headed “Internet Explorer 7” and only containing a short description of the service, the mail simply offers a download link.

Don’t do it – although of course you already know that.

Anyone clicking on that link goes to a fake browser page which loads a file called update.exe on the user’s computer, according to Vnunet. The file leaves the machine infected and downloads a variety of malware. In fact, it’s pretty much the same tactic used last month offering downloads of nude Angelina Jolie pictures.
