Iomega Pushes eGo Hard Drives to 1 TB

Iomega's new "Super eGo" external hard drive is certainly full of itself: after all, the new desktop model has a 1 TB capacity.

Storage vendor Iomega—currently in the process of being acquired by EMC—is letting its desktop eGo external hard drives get very full of themselves: the 3.5-inch USB 2.0 drive is now available in capacities up to 1 TB.

"By applying the award-winning style of the eGo design to a desktop hard drive, Iomega is giving users a one-terabyte Super eGo that’s all about form and function, a beautiful and pleasing design for even the most data-intensive applications," said Iomega’s VP of marketing Peter Wharton, in a statement.

The new 1 TB desktop models sport a USB 2.0 interface, a 7,200 rpm drive mechanism, at least 8 MB of onboard cache, and come pre-formatted with the NTFS file system. (The drives are still usable by Mac users, though: just reformat as a journaled Mac OS Extended volume). The drives are available in three colors—black, red, and blue—also ship with a download-only license to EMC’s Retrospect HD backup software. Although some of Iomega’s portable eGo hard drives can be powered off the USB bus, the desktop version require a separate AC power adapter.

Iomega says the 1 TB desktop eGo drives are available now at a suggested price of $269.95.
