Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid Has a Split Personality

ideapadu1hybridWe were expecting to hear announcements for new hybrid cars at CES 2010, but not hybrid computers. Lenovo today announced its IdeaPad U1 Hybrid in advance of the CES tradeshow. The IdeaPad U1 is—are you ready for this– a slate tablet running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM CPU and the Skylight Linux interface when a user is on the move, and then  if you dock it back into the clamshell it seamlessly switches back to a Windows 7 operating system, running on an Intel Core 2 Duo U4100 processor. Lenovo just manifested awesome in a 3.8-pound, 11.6-inch hybrid laptop.

It’s kind of like your notebook has an alter-ego. Both the tablet and the laptop share a battery, but the battery life varies with the slate lasting up to 8 hours on a single charge and the docked laptop only 6 hours. Other than the whole dual-device thing it’s got going on, the Lenvov IdeaPad U1 Hybrid has standard laptop features: including three USB ports, built-in Wi-Fi,VGA, HDMI, Ethernet (RJ-45), and a 4-in-1 reader (Multi-Media Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Secure Digital Card).

The device will be on display at CES this week and is set to ship in June of this year. Unfortunately, this new hybrid comp will cost you a pretty penny—try $999 of pretty pennies.

Why the latest ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 8 isn’t worth the upgrade
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 front angled view showing display.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is Lenovo's business-oriented 360-degree 2-in-1 laptop. I underwent a significant upgrade in its 6th generation, with the ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 model upgrading the components for faster speeds and better battery life. Now, Lenovo has released the 8th generation, and again it switches up the internals and leaves the external chassis alone.

But the changes in CPUs weren't simply an upgrade to the 13th-gen versions of the previous model's processors. Instead, Lenovo switched to 13th-gen low-power CPUs in most configurations. Was this an upgrade or a downgrade for this well-built business machine?

These updated laptops include the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11, X1 Yoga Gen 8, and X1 Nano Gen 3. None of them are getting major redesigns, but Lenovo is putting a big emphasis on upgrading them in terms of sustainability.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5i: a close competition
Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 front view showing display and folio keyboard.

Two new detachable tablet 2-in-1s hit the market recently, entering a space that's been dominated by Microsoft's Surface Pro for years. Lenovo has its new IdeaPad Duet 5i and Dell offers the XPS 13 2-in-1, the latter of which has morphed from a 360-degree convertible.

The Lenovo competes primarily on price while looking a lot like Microsoft's tablet, while Dell's model takes a different design path and costs a bit more. Which is the better tablet for you?
