MacBook iSight hack lets snoops spy on you without turning on the cam light

How’s this for creepy: Cassidy Wolf, who is none other than the reigning Miss Teen USA, found out the hard way that the MacBook’s iSight camera isn’t exactly a foolproof device.

A classmate of Wolf’s was able to shut off the camera’s indicator light with the use of special software. By doing so, he was able to spy on Wolf without her knowledge. With the light off, Wolf had no idea that the camera was on and running.

Two researchers at Johns Hopkins University, Matthew Brocker and Stephen Checkoway, co-authored a paper that explained how they were able to disable the iSight camera’s indicator light on MacBook notebooks and iMac desktops using OS X software called iSeeYou. After reporting their findings and revealing the iSight’s camera soft underbelly in their tests, they also built a countermeasure in the form of an OS X kernel extension, dubbed iSightDefender.

“iSightDefender is able to block all user space reprogramming attempts, including those mounted from within a virtual machine,” wrote Brocker and Checkoway. They go on to say that “using iSightDefender raises the bar for attackers by requiring the attacker to have root privileges in order to reprogram the iSight. In some sense, this is the strongest possible software based defense.”

Though it was initially thought that the vulnerability was confined to older versions of Apple’s MacBook, the FBI has reportedly been able to replicate the same iSight behavior on newer models of Cupertino’s popular laptop.

A YouTuber created a truly bezel-less MacBook
This MacBook has no bezels, thanks to Luke Miani's screen removal and Vision Pro replacement.

We've all seen the concept art of futuristic MacBooks that completely eliminate the bezels around the screen. Those are pure fantasy, even though Apple has significantly reduced bezel thickness on its most recent MacBooks.

However, those millimeters of wasted screen space on a MacBook can be infuriating, especially compared to the concepts out there.

MacBooks could soon fall behind the iPad Pro in this important way
The iPad Pro (2022) sitting in the Magic Keyboard.

The dynamic balance between the Mac and the iPad may be about to shift again. Both the MacBook Air and iPad Pro will reportedly get updated this spring, boosting performance with the inclusion of the new M3 chip.

But a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicates that a new "landscape Face ID camera" may be in the works for the iPad Pro, potentially taking away one of the main advantages that MacBooks have over iPads. With so much of work happening in video calls, the iPad Pro might become a far better laptop replacement in this new generation.

Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro: don’t make a mistake you’ll regret
The MacBook Pro open on a table in front of a couch.

When it comes to the best Apple laptops, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the true flagship model. It contains the fastest chips, the most storage, and the largest and most impressive display. It’s also the most expensive MacBook Pro, easily costing you thousands of dollars with just a few upgraded components.

That makes it tricky to work out how you should configure it and which version you should buy. There may only be three main choices you have to make -- the chip, the memory and the storage -- but each one carries a lot of weight. It’s important to make the right decision when you pull the trigger.
