Are you amongst those who flirt with digital disaster by never backing up your data off of your PC or laptop’s hard drive? If so, join the ranks of the many, according to a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive for hard drive maker Maxtor.

The survey, will polled 2,299 U.S. adults in late July, found that 35 percent have never backed up their files, while an even larger number – 76 percent – don’t back them up often enough. Also revealed was the fact that 44 percent indicated they have somehow lost important information on their hard drive as a result of something like a computer virus, hardware or software malfunction or some other reason.

Reasons for not backing up files varied, Maxtor said. 44 percent said they didn’t do it because they didn’t understand how, 21 percent thought it wasn’t important to do, 20 percent thought it took too much time and 14 percent avoided it because of believed costs of backup devices and services.

"Computer users who don’t have a systematic backup process are, in essence, walking a digital tightrope without a net," said Stacey Lund, vice president of marketing, Maxtor Branded Products Group. "Regrettably many people come to us after they’ve already lost their data because of an unfortunate instance like theft, a fire, a system crash, virus or an aggressive case of spyware.”

Maxtor has a prepared a website by which they provide recommendations on properly backing up critical data.
