Maxtor and Linksys are teaming up to offer a network storage solution, pairing Maxtor’s external USB hard drives with the new Linksys Storage Link.
The small network appliance connects up to two USB 2.0 hard drives directly to an Ethernet network. The device will also accept USB flash drives. The Network Storage Link can also be set up so that storage devices are accessible from the Internet and it features a built-in backup program to schedule full, incremental, or synchronization backups of network drives.
The Network Storage Link features built-in disk utilities, accessible through a web browser. Users can format new disk drives, and scan drives for errors. The device can also send an email message when a hard drive gets nearly full, completely full, or has an error.
Linksys and Maxtor are offering a $20 rebate for consumers that purchase the Linksys Storage Link and a Maxtor external hard drive. The Storage Link is availabe at retailers now for under $100.
The joint marketing of the Network Storage Link marks a new partnership in which Maxtor and Linksys will begin to promote each other’s products.
According to In-Stat/MDR, 2004 is the year for strong growth in home networking. Entertainment network connections are expected to double from 2003 to 2004, and to reach 51 million by 2005. “The initiative between Maxtor and Linksys brings together two companies with strong pedigrees in bringing value to consumers, and is a testament to the rapidly growing end-user demand for whole home entertainment distribution and storage,” noted Mike Wolf, principal analyst at In-Stat/MDR.
