Microsoft Windows Longhorn Preview

Techimo has a link to the much anticipated Microsoft Longhorn preview.

Regardless of how one feels about Microsoft, it is hard to dispute the impressive features found with the Longhorn operating system. A database file system, a composite-based graphics engine, and a hardware-accelerated 3D graphical user interface represent just a few of the greattechnologies slated for release with Longhorn in 2006. Too bad the current development version lacks many of the intended GUI updates, plus WinFS appears to still be in its preliminary developmentstages.

It’s clear from Longhorn’s scope that Microsoft has its work cut out for it. Delaying the release to 2006 was probably a good idea, as wringing out bugs, improving performance and ensuring usability will be a Herculean task. The upside of the delay is that it will allow hardware to catch up. While we do believe performance will improve over time, the feature set indicates you’ll need a pretty high-powered system by today’s standards.
