CNN is reporting that students at MIT are trying to develop $100 dollar laptops for use in developing countries.
“It’s a grand idea and a daunting challenge: to create rugged, Internet- and multimedia-capable laptop computers at a cost of $100 apiece.
The laptops would be mass-produced in orders of no smaller than 1 million units and bought by governments, which would distribute them.”
The affordable laptops would use a freely distributed version of Linux, a 12-inch LCD display and would be charged via a hand-crank. They will also have built in WiFi and even USB ports.
