Mozilla Releases Firefox Shiretoko Alpha 2

Mozilla has released the new update for its Firefox 3.1 browser, curiously named Firefox Shiretoko Alpha 2.

Firefox has released the second alpha version of Firefox 3.1 browser. Given the curious title of Shiretoko Alpha 2, it’s intended for developers and testers at this stage.

A company blog offers insights into its features, which include support for HTML 5 video, the ability to drag and drop tabs between browser windows, support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 properties. Mozilla announced:

“The second developer milestone of the next release of Firefox – code named Shiretoko Alpha 2 – is now available for download. Shiretoko is built on pre-release version of the Gecko 1.9.1 platform, which forms the core of rich internet applications such as Firefox.”

However, JavaScript engine TraceMonkey isn’t included in the release. According to Vnunet, that is available as an individual download. The browser should hit beta by the end of September, with a full release next month.
