New Worm Invades Instant Messaging

Akonix Security Center identifies new medium level threat currently attacking IM networks.

AKonix Systems has identified a new IM spyware worm named Chode-D, which is spreading quickly over the MSN network.  The worm is classified as ‘medium’ risk.

Chode-D runs in persistent memory and provided a backdoor server for remote intruders to access the system.  The infiltrators are able to access a compromised PC via IRC channels.  Once infected, the hacker can: send emails, download updates, participate in denial-of-service attacks, steal passwords, disable anti-virus products and modify a system HOSTS file.

For systems without AV software, it is recommended to install all the latest security patches for the operating system and IM software.
