Nvidia's new Quadro cards offer Titan X-beating power with a price to match

If you thought AMD’s new pro-focused graphics card was something special, Nvidia might have something to say about that. It has also launched some new graphics cards aimed at enterprise users, and those Quadro cards bring the power.

Announced at this week’s SIGGRAPH 2016 graphics conference, Nvidia’s new Quadro P6000 and P5000 are something quite special, with the former trouncing even the recently announced Titan X graphics card, which was a monster in itself.

The specifications on these are immense. The P5000 packs 2,560 CUDA parallel processing cores, 16GB of GDDR5X memory with a max power consumption of just 180w. While impressively efficient, though, it still delivers 8.9 teraflops of performance.

In comparison, the larger and more powerful Quadro P6000 is able to output 12 teraflops, thanks to its 3,840 CUDA parallel processing cores and 24GB of GDDR5X memory. Its power consumption is a little higher at 250w though.

Both cards are based on the same Pascal architecture as the GTX 1070 and 1080 graphics cards, though these are in a whole new world of raw performance if the numbers claimed by Nvidia are true. That should make them more than capable for tasks like virtual reality development, as well as video rendering and 3D work.

Nvidia is also touting 360 video editing as a job these cards as great for, according to RoadToVR. Stitching together several different video feeds is hefty work for a system, so something like one of these would be certainly suited to the task.

However, anyone planning to use either the Quadro P5000 or P6000 for anything will need to have deep pockets. The latter of those two cards comes in at $4,000, so they’re far from cheap. If you don’t have quite that much, you could always opt for Nvidia’s new Pascal Titan X. It’s not quite as monstrously powerful as these, but it’s only a couple of teraflops short.

A new leak suggests that AMD may have a new graphics card in the works -- and it just might be more powerful than Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3090. The rumored AMD Radeon RX 6900 XTX is said to be AMD's fastest Big Navi 21-based card, featuring improvements both in terms of memory and clock speeds. This information was shared on Twitter in the form of a slide that contains additional information about the card.

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, the manufacturer's current top powerhouse, comes in two variants: One with a Navi 21 XT GPU, and one discarded with a Navi 21 XTXH. Regardless of the Navi GPU used, both of these graphics cards are referred to as Radeon RX 6900 XT. According to a new leak posted on Twitter by CyberPunkCat, If the leak proves to be true, AMD's latest creation, the Radeon RX 6900 XTX, would be the third variant of this GPU. The leak suggests that AMD is working to utilize the Navi 21 XTXH and then equip it with faster memory and higher clock speeds. This would allow the card to rival, and even surpass, Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3090.

Nvidia’s RTX 3080 and 3090 just launched and, for now, don’t have much competition -- but that should soon change, as AMD will announce its next-generation Radeon hardware on October 28. AMD teased the performance of its new cards during its Zen 3 processor announcement by showing off three benchmark results.

The results showed Borderlands 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Gears 5, all at 4K resolution, and at each game’s maximum quality preset. The results showed Borderlands 3 at an average of 61 frames per second, Call of Duty at 88 frames per second, and Gears 5 at 73 frames per second.

These benchmarks are from AMD and are quoted for the “Radeon RX 6000 series.” The Radeon RX 6000 series isn’t an individual video card, but a lineup of cards. Of course, AMD would want to paint the series in the best light, so it’s safe to assume these results are from the fastest card in the upcoming lineup, which will likely be called the Radeon RX 6900XT.

Though a lot of the details about Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics have leaked in recent months, this is the first time we're hearing about how much the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 card could cost when it debuts. Most recently, Nvidia had placed an #UltimateCountdown clock on its social media pages, leading many industry insiders to speculate that September 1 will be when the RTX 3000 series will launch.

Information about the price comes by way of user Wjm47196 on the Chiphell forums, Wccftech reported. According to the user, the GeForce RTX 3090 could come with a starting price of $1,399, and the Founders Edition could be priced at an extra $100, bringing the cost to $1,499.
