Nvidia to release two more powerhouse graphics cards soon

Nvidia – which touts the best, fastest (and freakishly expensive) one-GPU graphics card with its GeForce GTX 780 Ti monster – is apparently doing its best to avoid a scenario where rival GPU maker AMD can reclaim that title.

Nvidia will reportedly be releasing two more super-charged graphics cards, adding to its existing lineup of heavy hitters which includes the GeForce GTX 780 Ti and the GeForce GTX Titan. The new arrivals will be dubbed the GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition, and the GeForce GTX 790, the latter of which will be powered by not one, but two GPUs.

While the GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition will allegedly by powered by the same GPU found in the GTX 780 Ti, it will sport 6GB of GDDR5 RAM. That’s double the amount that’s inside the GTX 780 Ti. Meanwhile, the double-GPU GeForce GTX 790 will include a whopping 10GB of GDDR5 RAM. That’s significantly more than the amount of DDR3 RAM found in most of the world’s modern PCs.

Though an official release date for either of the upcoming Nvidia graphics cards has yet to be revealed, the GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition will likely be released sometime next month. As for the GeForce GTX 790, that card could hit the market sometime in March. Both cards are expected to go for roughly $1,000.

Considering that the price tags for both the GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition and the GeForce GTX 790 are expected to hover in or around four digit territory, it’ll be interesting to see whether these cards take off or not, especially because the GeForce GTX 780 Ti can be had for hundreds less.

For instance, we’re currently seeing the PNY XLR8 GeForce GTX 780 Ti go for $673 on Froogle. Meanwhile, cards based on the AMD Radeon R9 290X, which is an excellent card in its own right, can be had for even less; the XFX Radeon R9 290X being sold for $600 on Froogle, as of this writing.

AMD might have a new graphics card next month, too

We weren't expecting to hear much about AMD's graphics cards in January, but a new rumor suggests we'll see a new GPU in just a few weeks. AMD is prepping the RX 7600 XT, according to Benchlife's sources (via VideoCardz). It's apparently an updated version of AMD's budget-focused RX 7600, sporting more VRAM and perhaps a better die.

To understand the rumored card, we have to look at the RX 7600 we already have. It's an 8GB graphics card based on the Navi 33 GPU. The card already maxes out the capabilities of the GPU with 32 Compute Units (CUs), equaling 2,048 cores. If AMD is preparing an RX 7600 XT, there are two possibilities. Either it will use the same maxed-out Navi 33 GPU or a stripped-down version of the Navi 32 GPU we see in cards like the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. Hopefully, the latter is true. Although the RX 7600 is a solid 1080p graphics card, it remains about 30% slower than the next step up in AMD's lineup.

Graphics cards are selling again, and that worries me

GPUs are selling again. Ever since the GPU shortage, graphics cards haven't been selling well, but a recent report from Jon Peddie Research shows that trend is changing. The report shows that GPU shipments increased by 16.8% compared to last quarter, which is a positive sign.  Still, I can't help but feel worried about what this could mean for GPU prices.

Both AMD and Nvidia came out of the pandemic highs with new ranges of graphics cards. Nvidia set the bar with pricing higher than we've ever seen before, and AMD quickly followed, pricing its cards just low enough to be considered a value by comparison. That's made the price of building a new gaming PC higher than it's ever been.

In this generation of GPUs, it's not AMD that has the best graphics cards -- it's still Nvidia. AMD's offerings have been strong, but Nvidia trumps it in pure performance, reaching for the stars with the wildly overpriced RTX 4090 while AMD keeps things slightly more reasonable with the RX 7900 XTX.

What can AMD do to turn things around and come out on top in 2024? Will it gain an edge over Nvidia? Signs are pointing to an interesting battle ahead, but for AMD to win, there are a few things that need to happen.
