Parallels accommodates Mac gamers in the latest Parallels Desktop 6, the virtualization software that makes it easy to run Windows applications under Mac OS X.

Windows users who happen to be on a Mac, and Mac users who have Windows apps, can now take advantage of the latest Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac. Parallels claims there are over 80 new features and improvements, such as using Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts and using Spotlight in Windows. The new version will be available Sept. 14.

Parallels is listening to the legions of gaming fans moaning about the lack of available titles on the Mac. Calling gaming and graphics “a priority” for Parallels 6, 3D graphics performance was significantly increased. Parallels Desktop 6 now has full 64-bit support and also supports 5.1 surround sound.

New security features include encrypting the virtual machine. Parental controls now work so that the settings applied on the Mac carry over onto the Windows side. Security software, such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 (Windows) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac are bundled. Parallels also included a backup and file recovery program and a hard drive utility from Acronis.

Some of the improvements are purely about making Parallels work faster. Parallels improved performance when handling files over a USB or network connection. It also sped up boot time, and the company claims Windows boots up 41 percent faster.

Although priced at $80, a cheaper student version and upgrade version will be available. Parallels 6 will also be included in the Switch to Mac bundle that targets PC users switching to a Mac.

  1. George at 9:21pm 29th September 2010 Being a mac user I know how difficult it can be when you need to run Windows based programs. I like the mac OS better than Windows, but when you need to run a Windows based program this Parallels works great. I've used an earlier version in the past.
