Philips Announces 50 GB Blu-ray Burner

At this week's Computex trade show, Philips has announced it will ship a Blu-ray disc burner for PCs which will support 50 GB media.

Although it’s not slated to be available until August or September of this year, at this week’s Computex trade show Philips took the opportunity to announce it will be shipping a Blu-ray disc burner for PCs with support for 50 GB media.

The as-yet-unnamed drive will be able to burn a 25 GB Blu-ray disc in about 70 minutes at 2x speed, and Philips claims it will support 50 GB media once that becomes available toward the end of 2006. Significantly, the drive will ship with a Blu-ray capable edition of Nero 7 (which pre-empts the question “what burning software supports a Blu-ray burner”

  1. Tim Stevens at 2:47pm 6th June 2006 Good question. I bet initially it's just a few companys manufacturing them and others rebadging. However, I think the initial salvo of people releasing them, like Pioneer, Philips and BenQ will actually be manufacturing them themselves.

I think they'll be more than $500, but under $1000.
