Plextor Delivers 18x DVD+/-R Burner

Plextor today said they were planning to ship shortly the industry’s first 18x DVD+/-R burner. The new PX-760A is priced at $119 and should be available in April.

The multifunction internal PX-760A, Plextor said, offers up versatile DVD/CD burning capabilities which reportedly get recording speeds of 18X DVD+/-R on certified 16X DVD+/-R media, 10X DVD+R on Double-Layer media and 6X DVD-R on Dual Layer media. The drive also supports 8X DVD+RW and 6X DVD-RW rewriting; 16X max DVD-reading; and 48X CD-R writing, 24X CD-RW rewriting and 48X max CD-reading.

Other features of the PX-760A include support of DVD+/-VR for direct disc recording, background DVD+RW formatting, an E-IDE (ATAPI) interface, short drive length of 6.69 inches and a 2MB memory buffer with included technology to help manage buffer underrun errors.

“Plextor continues to raise the bar with the fastest DVD burner on the market and more product choices than ever before,” said Pete Schwartz, vice president of marketing and business development for Plextor, in a statement. “The new PX-760A drive is the first 18X internal drive specifically designed for business users and consumers who want high-end performance with a rich feature set.”

The XPS 16 is fighting an uphill battle against the MacBook Pro
Dell XPS 16 sitting on desktop with flowers.

It took a few years, but Dell finally updated the design of its two largest XPS laptops. The XPS 15 gave way to the XPS 14, while the XPS 17 was replaced by the XPS 16. The latter gained the ultramodern look of the XPS 13 Plus, complete with a glass palm rest, a hidden haptic touchpad, and a row of LED function keys.

It's a significant update but places the XPS 16 in direct competition with the Apple MacBook Pro 16. That's an excellent matchup with proven performance and battery life and an elegant design that's solid, if a lot more conservative.
