Retailer Tesco Revamps Its Download Site

Tesco Downloads will become Tesco Digital to take on iTunes.

Leading British supermarket chain Tesco is gunning for iTunes. Next month it will revamp its Tesco Download service,re-branding it as Tesco Digital. With a library of over three million tracks, it has a lot of music to offer. Initially, 1.6 million will be in the DRM-free MP3 format, with the rest in Windows MediaAudio, or WMA, although Tesco has pledged that all music will be in MP3 by year’s end. Additionally there will be more than a hundred free Flash games to play. The company plans to offer TVepisodes and games for download in the future.   Graham Harris, Commercial Director at Tesco, said,   “The new Tesco Digital site is more than a music download portal – wewanted to create an exciting and easy-to-use entertainment shop that Tesco customers of all ages and technical ability can use and trust. We’re starting out with a comprehensive music offering, but customers can expect downloadable TV and films as well as games to buy very soon.”   No pricing structure has been announced, but Tesco has a reputation for being competitive.
