Samsung intros ATIV Book 5 Ultrabook and ATIV Book 6 laptop with touchscreens

samsung-ativ-book-5-6_dtCheck out our review of the Samsung ATIV Book 5 ultrabook.

Samsung surprised us today with two new notebooks: the Samsung ATIV Book 5 Ultrabook, and the Samsung ATIV Book 6 laptop. Both are available for pre-order today and serve different needs. The ATIV Book 5 is a sleek machine designed for portability, while the ATIV Book 6 is a computing powerhouse that’s still easy to transport.

While both laptops vary in terms of use cases, they mark a change in the way Samsung’s naming its laptops. Previously, Samsung labeled its computers as “Series 7 All-In-One,” “Series 7 Chronos,” or “Series 9.” That’s all been simplified thanks to the ATIV moniker, which the company was using for its convertible Windows 8 PCs. This means the “Series 7 All-In-One” is now the “ATIV One 7,” and the “Series 7 Chronos” is now the “ATIV Book 8.”

The Samsung ATIV Book 5 Ultrabook cuts a slim profile at 0.82 inches thin and 4.19 pounds. It features a 14-inch, 1366 x 768 touchscreen display and is powered by a 1.8-GHz Intel Core i5-3337U processor with integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, and 4GB of RAM. For a speedy boot time and lots of storage, the ATIV Book 5 packs a 500GB hard disk drive coupled with a 24GB solid-state drive. According to Samsung, it’ll last up to 6.5 hours away from an outlet. It’s available for pre-order today for $899.

If you’re looking for a high-powered laptop, the Samsung ATIV Book 6 might be right up your alley. Though it may look similar to the ATIV Book 5 above, this laptop features a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 full HD touchscreen display for optimal viewing. However, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts with this machine. It’s packed with a 2.4-GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-3635QM processor, discrete AMD Radeon HD 8770M graphics, 8GB of RAM, and 1TB hard drive. While the ATIV Book 6 is poised to be a gaming and multimedia powerhouse, it weighs a very reasonable 5.18 pounds and is only 0.90 inches thin. The ATIV Book 6 is also available for pre-order today for $1,199.

Both laptops feature Samsung’s new SideSync technology, which allows Samsung smartphone users to switch between the two devices more easily. Connecting an Android-powered Samsung phone via USB to the Samsung notebook lets users answer text messages using their computer, edit files on the phone with their PC, and drag and drop files between the two devices. The idea is that your phone won’t distract you from your computer and vice versa, but this is definitely something we’d like to see in person before making a judgement on it. Hopefully, we’ll have the chance to put both these machines through their paces soon.

You can finally buy Samsung’s ultra-slim, Intel-powered Galaxy Book S
samsung galaxy book s review hands on 6

Starting today, you can grab the Intel version of Samsung's Galaxy Book S for as low as $949. With the launch of the Galaxy Book S, Samsung is forcing the ultimate showdown between Intel's Lakefield hybrid chip and Qualcomm's emerging ARM-based Snapdragon processor for Windows PCs. In addition to the "Intel Inside" version of the Galaxy S, Samsung also has the same laptop design available in a configuration that features a Snapdragon 8cx processor.

There are some differences between the two versions. The biggest benefit with going with the Intel Core i5-powered Galaxy Book S is compatibility with apps. Even though the Snapdragon version can emulate apps, a common complaint in the past with the Snapdragon 8cx platform is that emulated apps can take longer to launch and often times run slower than on a comparable x86 system with Intel or AMD processors.

Microsoft Memorial Day Sale: Asus, Lenovo, Samsung laptops reduced early
A Microsoft Surface Book opened and being used.

Microsoft has kicked off its Memorial Day sales — sort of. While the retailer hasn’t mentioned the holiday by name, it has cast some fantastic discounts into the wild at the same time its rivals are launching their promotions … and that can’t be a coincidence. After all, it’s not every day you see a Razer Blade 15.6 in the sale bin for $930 under sticker. But we digress. You’re here for the savings, and we aren’t going to stand in your way a second longer.

In typical fashion, we tasked our team of bargain hunters with the all-important mission of trimming the fat off the meat. What we’re left with is a selection of the best laptops on offer as part of Microsoft’s let’s-not-call-it-a-Memorial-Day-(not-yet-at-least)-sale. The standouts? A spreadsheet-loving Lenovo IdeaPad 2-in-1 for $699, down $200 from $899, and a battlefield-ready Asus ROG Zephyrus M for $1,300, down a massive $500 from $1,800.

Samsung’s Galaxy Book Ion is an affordable laptop with an awesome display
samsung galaxy ion 15 hands on qled features price photos video release date book flex 1

The Galaxy Book Flex brings QLED to laptops, at a high price. But Samsung didn't want to stop there. Samsung wants to bring QLED screens to more affordable devices as well. With the new Galaxy Book Ion, Samsung offers almost everything you'll find on the flagship Samsung Galaxy Book Flex, but in a less expensive, more traditional laptop.
A shared heritage
When I first walked up to try out the new Galaxy Book Ion, I right away noticed it's stunning near edge-to-edge QLED display. Just like the Galaxy Book Flex, the colors of the default wallpaper on the laptop were brighter and more vibrant compared to the LED display on the older Notebook 9 sitting right next to it. The Ion even has the same "Outdoor mode" as the Flex, brightening its display up to 600 nits.

Both the 13-inch and 15-inch models come with this new screen, and the colors look just as brilliant on the Ion as it does on the Flex.
