Samsung’s Android Tablet Coming Within 60 Days

Samsung shows up fashionably late to the Android Tablet party with a new product scheduled to release this quarter.

Samsung Electronics Co plans to introduce tablet computers this quarter based on Google’s Android operating system, joining a growing list of firms seeking to challenge Apple’s popular iPad.

Global handset vendors and PC makers including Nokia, LG Electronics and Hewlett-Packard Co are moving into the new category of devices, between traditional PCs and smartphones, taking a cue from Apple.

Samsung, the world’s No.2 handset maker after Nokia, said its tablet PC will have a 7-inch display, smaller than the 9.7-inch screen on the iPad, which has sold more than 3 million units since its April launch.

It did not provide further details.

Its local rival LG Electronics, the world’s No.3 handset maker, also plans to introduce tablets or slate devices running on Android in the fourth quarter.

Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it would introduce new tablets based on its Windows operating system soon to beat back advances by Apple and Google and is working with PC makers Acer Inc, Dell Inc, Toshiba Corp and others to develop the devices.

Sure that samsung gonna rock with tablets like thay have done with range of their android based mobile phone. And apps have played clear role in establishing the leadership. 2. momo at 2:25am 12th August 2010 From users point of view this may be great news. From developers side I can tell you this is a pain in the ass. All the JavaME design errors and fragmentation are already on Android. The fragmentation on screen resolution, sizes and dpi, and not maintaining the ratio is by far the most annoying issue. Although Google tried to do resources and layout separation, you can see this is not working well. And the UI elements are just pure crap so you have to code your owns almost from scrath.
  3. Chris at 8:27pm 2nd August 2010 Whoever thinks that Android is coming up with the sizes for these tablets are on drugs. Samsung made this choice not android. All they did was pay google to have android usage rights. Sometimes, u stupid people make me laugh. Oh and if u wanna diss apple thats fine. but i there isnt a tablet, and wont be one, as good as the ipad for atleast another year. by then the 2nd gen ipad will be out. Kind of like the first gen iphone. Without apple we would still be lost in blackberry's.
  4. madpuppy at 1:31pm 1st August 2010 everyone knows that Apple fanboys are Steve Jobs personal ATM machine. heck! Apple doesn't even need to try with them anymore.
  5. Indifferent at 4:30am 1st August 2010 Wow, and I thought the Apple fanboys were annoying
    1. kii at 7:15am 1st August 2010 Android "fanboys" are more annoying, cause the iPhone and iPad is getting more credit than they deserve :P

  7. vishal at 10:12pm 31st July 2010 I agree with foo android will give more options so its upto you what size u want . Just like how mc donalds gives you all the options but again the most ordered size is the upsize one aint it ?
    1. Snarky at 9:51am 1st August 2010 If only McDonald's gave the us the option to buy food... sigh
  8. foo at 9:29pm 31st July 2010 I think the biggest selling point of Android is that it will allow manufactures to produce tablets that are smaler than the iPad, bigger than the iPad, or the same size. One size does not fit all.

  9. taggytow at 9:05pm 31st July 2010 That actually makes a lot of sense dude. www.real-privacy.at.tc

  11. BadCub01 at 5:24pm 31st July 2010 2.7" smaller than the iPad. Wow, that's a major selling point. Being a recovering iPhone user that switched to the EVO, I think Samsung really screwed-the-pooch one.
    1. dr.p at 11:42pm 31st July 2010 BadCub01, I'm not so sure that Samsung screwed any pooch since their A4 chip is what powers the new iPhones.
    2. Radhika Ray at 11:33pm 5th April 2011 there are too many new games being launched in market off late. The customers are really spoilt for the choice but who's complaining. More the merrier. But android has opened possibility of a whole new world of mobility and also turned fortune for samsung as a mobile handset manufacturer. Samsung has really emerged as a strong competitor to the leader for long Nokia
