Web Apps / Any OS Apps

Regardless of if you’re on a Mac or a PC, there are tons of web-based applications out there that you can use directly from your browser. Below you’ll find some of our favorite free options for everything from Photo/video editing, to office software.

Pixlr: an incredibly powerful and straightforward web-based photo editor. Other Options: MugTug, Aviary.

Google Drive: Google’s free, web-based office suite is easy to use, carries nearly all the features you’d ever need and can be accessed from anywhere. Other options: The Zoho suite offers a more powerful office suite with a slightly steeper learning curve, and Open Office is another strong alternative.
 
WriteSpace: this is a simple browser add-on that gives you an uncluttered space where you can focus on writing. The best part is that documents can be created and saved in your browser even if you aren’t connected to the net.
 
Prey: Prey is a free and open-source device recovery service. If you computer or phone is ever stolen, you can log in to your Prey account to find out where your computer is being used. You can even take snapshots remotely to get a picture of the robber’s face! Free is a small price to pay for the comfort of knowing you’ll always be able to locate your computer or phone if it’s ever stolen.
 
Plex: Plex is a UPnP media server client with a sleek interface, tons of features and connectivity options, and is completely free. We’ve recommended it before in a number of our media server setup tutorials. Plex also makes a media manager program that’s a great-looking alternative to your plain old iTunes or WMP.
 
ClipConverter.cc: Whenever you need to convert an audio or video file to a different format, look no further than clipconverter.cc It can handle just about any format you throw at it and performs conversions with atonishing speed. It’s available as either a web or desktop app and runs on both Windows and OSX.
 
ifttt: This is a web service that works much like Automator does on a mac. It allows you to make all your web favorite webapps work together. It uses simple rules that are easy to understand, so automating routine tasks is incredibly easy. This program’s capabilities are nothing short of mind boggling and you can get really creative in the ways you use it. If you only click on one of the links on this page, make it this one.
 
Wunderlist: Wunderlist is an awesome task management/note taking program that you can use as a webapp or as a desktop app for virtually any OS. Other good options are Simplenote and Evernote
