Toshiba Leads in CE HDD Shipments
New data from research firm IDC shows that maker of hard disk drives for various CE devices leads in Q3 2005 market share.
Toshiba was tooting their horn yesterday as they announced that, according to recent data from research firm IDC, they had topped all hard disk drive manufacturers in consumer electronics HDD shipments for the third quarter of 2005.
The data from IDC reveals that Toshiba had a global market share of 27.5 percent for all HDDs shipped into consumer electronics and 43.9 percent share when excluding the 3.5†drive category. Toshiba’s 2.5â€, 1.8†and 0.85†HDDs have found or will be finding their way into a variety of devices, including mobile PCs, GPS systems, mobile phones, PDAs, digital still cameras, MP3 players and automobile entertainment systems.
“We continue to see strong demand in the mobile HDD segment, a strategic segment for Toshiba,” said Dave Reinsel, program director for storage research at IDC. “As the HDD industry becomes more competitive, the companies who will win must have both the right technology and innovations, and be able to deliver on customer demand.”
“This has been a landmark year for Toshiba with milestone achievements in new technologies like perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), automotive HDDs and shipment of our 100 millionth mobile HDD,” said Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. “We continue to see tremendous demand for small form factor HDDs in traditional markets like mobile computing, as well as new consumer devices. Our performance in Q3 is indicative of our ability to drive adoption of leading-edge storage technologies and deliver on market demand.”
