Toshiba Tecra M6: Slim & Core Duo

Toshiba's Tecra M6 aims at the size-conscious business traveller, with a 12.1-inch screen, fingerprint reader, Trusted Platform Module, and spill-resistant keyboard.

Toshiba’s new Tecra M6 notebook system aims that the business traveler who needs an moderately-priced computer, but for whom security and portability are key factors. Although it’s also available with Celeron or Core Solo processors, the Tecra M6 offers Core Duo processors up to 2.16 GHz and an integrated biometric fingerprint reader, Security Assist Console (which creates a “vault-like” security system), and Trusted Platform Module to make sure your data (and your network access) stay secure even if the laptop should, somehow, go astray. The Tecra M6 features a 1280 by 800 12.1-inch display, integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (so action gamers need to look elsewhere), a spill-resistant keyboard, a study chassis to help protect against bumps and thumps, and Windows XP Professional.

Pricing starts at $1,059, but you’ll probably want to pump up the M6 with some options: by default it ships with a scant 40 GB hard drive and 256 MB of RAM, no BlueTooth, and no WiFi at all. But Toshiba claims the system gets up to 5.1 hours of battery life, and at 4.1 pounds, it’s easy on the carry-on luggage.
