A new crop of Internet phone services must provide emergency 911 service to their subscribers, the nation's s top communications regulator said Monday.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell stopped short of saying his agency would require so-called Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services to supply 911.
“The commitment of the FCC remains deep and unwavering,” Powell told a meeting of emergency call-center administrators. “We need to address the interest of public safety in the new systems.”
