Western Digital Produces Largest Hard Drive

Western Digital's new 2TB Caviar Green drive is the largest 3.5-inch drive ever produced, with a whopping 2TB of capacity.

Bigger doesn’t usually mean “greener,” but in the case of Western Digital’s new 2TB Caviar Green drives, that seems to be the case. According to the company, the goliath drives are both the biggest it has ever produced, and among the best on the market when it comes to power consumption.

Western Digital announced the drives, which fit 2TB of storage into a standard 3.5-inch drive profile, on Tuesday. The Californian company claims that technologies like StableTrac, IntelliPower, IntelliSeek, and NoTouch help reduce power consumption by 40 percent over “standard drives,” amounting to about 4 or 5 watts.

Other specs include a 32MB cache, SATA transfer rates of 3Gb/s, and an amazing 400GB per square inch of data density.

The drives are available immediately for $300 from select WD retailers and distributors.
