Microsoft might claim to have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses with an upgrade rate outpacing that of Windows 7′s, but according to a recent Wired story, sales of new Windows 8 computers haven’t been meeting the company’s expectations. If Winsupersite’s report is to be believed, Microsoft blames the slow sales on “lackluster PC maker designs and availability,” to which the manufacturers reply something to the effect of: “Don’t blame us.”
As we mentioned earlier, Reuters reported that a big chunk of the the 40 million licenses sold were bought by PC makers. These Windows 8 computers are almost reaching projected sales, manufacturers told Wired. However, Toshiba America claimed it had lower expectations than previous Windows versions since there are a lot more platforms and devices now. ”In the past Windows was the only game in town, when it was Windows 7 or Vista it was the big event of the year,” Jeff Barney, VP and general manager of Toshiba America, told Wired. ”These days it’s a different environment.”
In the same story, Dave McFarland, Sony’s VAIO product manager, said that sales have been meeting the numbers they projected before Windows 8′s launch, but that sales of computers with the new operating system have been comparatively slow. People might have been more eager to switch to Windows 7 from the universally panned Windows Vista, McFarland said, than from the well-loved Windows 7 to Windows 8.
As for reports that Microsoft is blaming manufacturers for their “lackluster PC design,” Barney believes that Toshiba America and other hardware companies will come up with more commercially viable computers in the future, and that Windows 8 will continue gaining traction in 2013. “This first generation is a rush to get there in the beginning,” Barney said. McFarland also believes that money might have played a factor in the slower-than-projected adoption rates, as Windows 8 was released in October, when people were saving up for the holidays.
Both Barney and McFarland agree that Microsoft and computer manufacturers should work together instead of blaming each other to figure out why they aren’t doing as well as they’d like. Barney also thinks it’s wise for both parties to focus on one key feature to sell consumers: touch.
What do you think Microsoft and PC makers can do to speed up sales of Windows 8 computers? Let us know in the comments.
Stop forcing windows 8 on everyone
Hey Microsoft, I DID buy a new HPlaptop for my home business then promptly yanked the hard drive out and replaced it with a new drive and a fresh install of win7pro. Unlike most consumers, I don’t need tiles on my desktop, oh yeah and I need my business software TO WORK! Your new OS looks like Matel’s “my first operating system” for kindergarteners. Nope. If I want a tablet I will get a tablet.
Like why is it that anymore it’s cheaper to buy a new printer than the ink cartridges.I recently bought a Canon printer for $39.00 when it ran out of ink the cartridges were $52.00, I bought a new HP printer for $39.00 the ink is a little cheaper than the printer but it won’t take long before it will be more economical to buy a new printer again. Wish someone would address this scam on the consumers.
I think I’ll blame the stink of my feces on the city sanitation department.
Win7 is a great OS, you can easily get 3-5 years out of it. I’m only into my 2 year with mine, no rush to buy anytime soon.
AND IF YOU DONT BUY THE PRO VERSION YOUR UP SHITS CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE OR 69.99 WHICH EVER COMES FIRST…IF YOU PLAN ON PLAYING DVDS ETC ITS NO LONGER FREE
Interesting. I was just in Chicago and the ads where everywhere.. escalators, buses.. in on of the malls, there was a large windows 8 station set up, with employees. I would have expected it to boom!
Richard those HP Printer’s ARE a scam. The ink in them is about 1/2 of what it looks like.
I hate how microsoft is pushing their new OS already… Just shows how greedy they are. 3 new OS’s in the past 5 years. People are just getting used to the idea of Windows 7, and now they are ending their support for XP. Lets throw another wrench into the mix!
Horrible.
get use to it they are going to a yearly model the same as apple.. its what people want cheaper but more often..
Oh, you mean rushed unfinished products? I don’t think “the people” want that. The people had a hard enough time transitioning from XP to Vista, then to 7. Let alone going to 8. Apple, in their infinite wisdom, doesn’t know everything.
Yeah, but Apple doesn’t redesign the total architecture and release the beta model as the production version ie:ME beta for XP, Vista beta for 7, 8 beta for ??? (we’ll find out next year when 9 drops)
I purchased a Win 8 Acer laptop with a touchscreen. I bought a new 14.99 MS mouse at the same time. I used the preview in a virtual machine and it’s not the same experince. I love Windows 8 it makes me think of why did I ever use the start button. I bought the touch screen but never really use it. I only use touch to bring the charms menu up. I do find my self in the desktop area more then the panels although I connect to my work computer using Junos Pulse on the desktop then I run Remote Desktop which I downloaded from the MS store. It’s nice it saves each remote session as a shortcut and i just have to enter my password. The search is nice as you just start typing and it does the search.
Make Windows 9 like Windows 7 only better. I liked Coca Cola Classic. Return to computer OS greatness. Mouse and Keyboard approved.
i’m still going to keep repairing my computers running XP and keep them going. the OS is irrelevant, its the web experience.
