Being in Vegas doesn't make you Hunter S Thompson, and taking advantage of your access to make fun of attendees' and exhibitors' names, dress, appearance and technologies doesn't make you an investigative journalist. (It does make you a dick.)

Editorializing is one thing, ripping people is quite another.

This piece did more harm to your own career than it did to any of the companies and individuals you slammed within. Best of luck applying the right lessons learned towards bettering yourself as a writer, or I suppose the wrong ones towards improving your skill creating sensationalistic link-bait at the expense of the companies you cover.

Actually Andrew, what I said was 'Our mission is to bring the communities of banking, payments, mobile transactions and technology, and financial services together to figure out what the future of money will look like.' And that was in an email. Next time you want to quote me actually ask me a question first. And congrats on making fun of my name - kids did that when I was 12.

You got BitCoin right, and yes you're very witty, but a little reasonable discourse would have been appreciated. I guess at a conference of 3,000 people you can find just about any angles you want. Your point here(i think) is that this market has a long way to go. Which was the reason we put this together.

I volunteered time there because I believe this is really cool technology with a lot of promise. Much like I will do at the Everywhere.else Conference next February in Memphis. If you're ever really interested in talking about people actually making a difference - away from your martini slamming - I'd be happy to.

Thank you for the flattering description, Andrew }:-) <--caveman brow Don't drink and never done acid but if I have to listen to one more presentation on "innovation" in credit card payments, I might have to start.

Thanks, Ian!

The big credit card companies are all dabbling in various "digital wallet" spaces. Visa has V.me, which is an online payment service, but has nothing to do with NFC. MasterCard has PayPass, which is NFC-enabled. Visa, MC, AMEX, and Discover all work with ISIS digital wallet (another NFC one). Most cards (credit and debit) work with Google Wallet, as well.

And yes, you're right, it's amazing that NFC sales are that big. I don't know a single person that uses NFC, at least not regularly. It's still a novelty, and will probably stay that way for a few years. Things will start to get sorted eventually. But for now, it's just a big mess.

Excellent piece Andrew!

It sounds like we have a ways to go in terms of digital payments, and there isn't a true winner in the space yet. I am curious though, who is Visa/Mastercard/AMEX all supporting? Their own digital systems, or those from Google or a 3rd party?

I was also surprised to hear that $25 billion was spent on NFC sales. I have yet to meet someone that has made a purchase with their phone at a checkout.
