8 Megapixel does not insure great photographs UNLESS coupled with top-
notch optics. Canon has both and the
photo results show it. The S80 has
a big (2-1/2″) LCD. Good battery life
and no noticeable shutter lag. Users
with large hands have to be careful
not to cover the flash window or move the sliding lens cover which will then shut the camera down.
I added a 1GB SD Memory card which gives 290 photos at the highest resolution. The S80 is a rugged compact take anywhere camera for those of us that do not like wearing a digital SLR on our necks but want the great results.

Bought this, had a canon G5 before it. What a dissapointment this has been. On the seventh day, the lens froze, and “E18″ popped up on the LCD. Phoned canon, who said it was my fault, as E18 only comes up after abuse of the camera! WOW! I have been handling it with kid gloves!

Long story short, buy it only if you intend to use it for less than a week! I expected more from canon, I have been happy with my G5, but this just let the name down!

I read the other review. I too, have had trouble with lens freezing with an E18. No abuse here! We’ll see what Canon does to repair-at no cost, or I return Camera, Will keep you posted.

If you have an E18 error, try this:

hit the camera lens mount fairly hard into the palm of your hand, then press the lens mount hard and evenly back into the camera body.

All I can say is that the camera is working again now!

    Good luck.

Geoff Heathcote ~ Thank you for telling what you did to make your camera start working again, even if you’re not sure why it helped. I suddenly, for no reason, started getting the E18 error message about 20 months ago and I had just passed the end of my 2 year warranty. I looked into getting it fixed but kept putting it off because of the cost to fix it. Today I was looking into information on the message again, and your post was the only post that wasn’t just a complaint. I tried the same thing you did, and it worked! I couldn’t close my cover, because the lens wouldn’t retract all the way in, but it also wouldn’t come out when it was on. I evenly shoved the lens back all the way into the camera and turned the camera on. The lens would pop out slightly(not all the way) and then retract slightly again and the E18 message appeared. I repeated that step about 4 more times, and then pushed the button to take a picture(mostly out of frustration), and the lens came out!! It now works fine! I don’t know why it helped, but thanks for the tip!! Besides the lens issue, I love the camera and hopefully I won’t have this problem again, and if I do, I will at least know something to try that is FREE and might fix the problem!!!

I use my PowerShot S80 for almost 2 1/2 year. I am satisfy with it and I use it very often to take daily photo of my kids.

The first time, I am taking photo on my kid’s classmate birthday party, after few shots, my S80 suddenly not function with the len is extended. I use to change the battery but still not thing happen. I suddenly feel, may be my camera was end with it’s life, or may be I am over use it for day to day photo shot.

I check carefully my S80 when I back home, and found out, when i remeove the battery and restart the camera, I can hear motor sound inside the camera when I get it close to my ear, but the len did not move back to it position, and the LCD screen with a E18 letter in the lower left hand side. then it turn off itself.

After surfing the internet and try several method post in some forum, and it did not work on my S80.

Then i follow your method – hit the camera lens mount fairly hard into the palm of my hand, and the lens move back and I continuous hold the outer section ( Bigger part ) of the lens and turn it back inside the camera body with some force of turning it. Then insert the battery, and power on the S80. It work again !!!! and back to normal even I noticed there have a some unnoticed noise sound when i use it to focus object and some delay when i close the lens cover.

I am thank you for your posting let my S80 work again. Don’t know how long it will last, but will post the problem if any things will happen again.

    Thank You.
